Plant attributes search

This searches all the plants in our plant database. You can only choose one of the attributes at a time, then select criteria for that attribute and hit search. You will then be given a list of plants. To gain access to content on these plants and to use the plant calendar, you must be a Cityfood Growers paid member.

Moon planting search

Our moon planting search always uses the current day you are at the home page of our web site, you cannot choose the day yourself. Simply hit 'Go' and you will be shown the grouping of plants suitable for the day of search. This is based on the four quarters of the moon cycle. Plants are grouped into root, leaf, flower/seed and fruit. These groupings are based on the primary part of the plant you eat, for example, a brocolli plant is flower grouping because you eat the flower. The moon has two key points during its four week cycle each month. These are new moon and full moon. Week 1 after new moon is leaf, week two is flower/seed and fruit and week 3 after the full moon is root. Then week 4 is no planting. The logic for the moon planting cycles is based on very old farming principles and is widely used with organic farming and gardening practices.

Biodynamic gardening practices also use the impact of other planets in our solar system and the 12 constellations. It provides a more wholistic view of planetary impacts. You can access the Biodynamic planetary data via our Localised content membership. This will also give you access to all the plants suitable for your climate profile.

Registering as a member

Free member
To register as a free member click 'free membership' in the green login box and this will open a popup box. This popup will also appear when you enter the home page. Enter your first name, surname, password and email address and hit 'register'. You will then be sent an email and be asked to click a link in the email to confirm your free membership. Once you do this, you will be able to login as free member. You can then post to our forum, blog and event calendar and receive our email newsletter. You only need to register once as free member. If you intend to become a paid member, you must firstly login as free member and then click on 'become a paid member' in the green member profile box. You will then be asked to register all your contact information and be taken to a secure credit card payment form where you can select Localised content or Content membership. Complete this payment form and when you receive your email with your payment approval message, logout as a free member and then log back in again with the same user ID and password, now as a paid member. The system will then recognise you as a paid member.

Paid membership
Click on the Join now from the Membership page and you will be taken to our membership registration page. This member registration page must be completed by all paid members. Once this is completed, you will be taken to the payment page. When your credit card payment is processed, you will receive an email confirming if your payment is approved or rejected. If approved, you can login with your user name and password to the paid member area. If it is not approved, please check your credit details and attempt the transaction again. We use secure real time credit card processing, so this should take no longer than 5 seconds. Sometimes, due to network issues in the banking system, this may take longer, so please be patient. Do not press submit more than once on the payment page.

Paid member profile
When you have logged in as a paid member for the first time, it is very important, if you are a Localised content member, to establish your garden bed profile, otherwise you will not be able to use the planting calendar in the member area. Click the link “member profile†in the right hand member box and then 'edit your existing profile'. You must then select your country, state and then nearest weather station. These are listed in alphabetical order per state and are normally names of towns or suburbs and landmarks within major cities. When you have selected weather station, the elevation of the station will appear. Please note this elevation as the next section of your profile asks for your approximate elevation above the weather station, as this will affect your garden bed temperature. You will also be asked for your garden bed shade profile. Once you complete these fields and the fields below it, save and your garden bed profile will be established and you can begin using the planting calendar.
